The modern version

I loved this book as a kid, so I was excited to find a copy for my daughters. I started reading it and right away, the main character is talking about her dad sending her an email. Whoa! This book was written in 1985! I handed it off to my girls and stopped thinking about it. They both loved it! My oldest said there's an interview with Lois Duncan at the back in which she explains that her publisher asked her to update all of her old books. Apparently, she spent a lot of time figuring out how to destroy cell phones, in order to keep the plots the same. I gave four stars because well, it's not the original, which was fantastic. But 13 and 11 year-olds will still love it and it will make sense in their world. (PS - Amazon still has the original version, if you want to read it.)

Locked In Time

Can you imagine never growing older? Being stuck at the age you are right now for all eternity? If you were Lisette, Gabe or Josie in the novel "Locked In Time", by Lois Duncan, you'd know what it feels like to be the same age for over 100 years. Decades pass, new invention develop, those around you die, but you keep living on... When Nore Robbins goes to live with her dad, who recently remarried Lisette, she begins to sense something about her step-mother and her two kids. Through overhearing mysterious comments and piecing clues together, Nore begins to realize that her new step-family, by some strange occurence, never ages and never will because they are locked in time. The best part about this book is that it has it all (except comedy)... drama, murder, romance, mystery, suspense, science fiction and plenty of real life aspects. Having been written in first person main character, the book gives the reader an inside view on the story. You're right there with Nore as she's hearing the odd fragment of inforamtion and it's almost as if you are helping her piece clues together. The major lesson/moral that was clearest to me from "Locked In Time" was that some secrets just aren't meant to be kept behind closed doors forever. They're bound to be let out in the open sometime, especially if you try to hard to conceal them. Although the book isn't adult-themed, the plot and subtle clues about the ending throughout the book would make it difficult for anyone under 11 to understand and enjoy.

"A very quiet man, smoking all the time. He used to tattoo while seated on a little bench in the back room of his house at 59 Redfern Road, Harleston, in London, while his wife busied herself in the kitchen. There was no flash on the wall, just a book on the table and on the side of his bench he had a roll of paper towel, actually a toilet roll. It was a small room. You had to wait outside. You could not go in until someone came out. There not much to tell about Rich Mingins," recalls George Bone, whose body is adorned with examples of Mingins's work. Tattoo artist George Bone is one of the few surviving people with tattoos by Mingins, who was an enigmatic man about whom very little is known. "When he was doing his tattoos, he actually never spoke. His work spoke for itself."

And that it did. Mingins's work was extremely popular in his time. "His artistic work and custom designs were of high quality, and really stood apart from work of other tattoo artists," states Bone, "I had the impression, perhaps mistakenly, that he was the type of man who would say no to an interview, so it's not surprising that so little is known about him."

Mingins's scrapbooks convey a beautiful overview of the world of tattoos and attitudes toward them during the first half of the 20th century.

Incredible historical document

Schiffmacher deserves huge credit for preserving and compiling all the wonderful artifacts and photos relating to our art and business---I first went crazy over old tattoo photos with the publication of Spider Webb's "heavily tattooed men and women" back in the 70's ( another whose books are really worth getting) This is an exact reproduction of English Master Tattooist Rich Mingins personal scapbook--page after page exactly as he pasted it in of all matter of tattoo photos---his own superb work,and any and all photos he could get get his hands on, from all eras...some wild stuff here! Pics of work benches, tattoo store fronts from all over the world, plenty of staged photos of machine touching already healed tattoos-- a great way to study machines with a magnifying glass... no backstory except for some hand written info by Mingins himself. You really have to have a sense of wonder to appreciate and study these ancient photos within---like, who WERE these people?!? What were they thinking? Their sexual lives? Plenty to speculate about there! A must for any tattoo historian!

I own many books with beautiful and colorful photos of tattoos, but this book is quite distinctive because the photos are a real rarity. They're very old and I'm amazed that Mr. Mingins managed to acquire them and preserve them. They're truly fascinating....

Not only for coaches! Starting with the authors' personal stories and moving through analysis of the human condition as a whole, this book is packed with inspiration and advice on how to move forward in relationships with others, in life and in work. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in self improvement - it is down to earth, non-pretentious and very, very readable.

The idea behind the book is that we start as a whole, part of One (or God, or the Universe) and our human experience is that we are fragmented, but it is now time for Integration, slowly moving back towards wholeness.

Integration will help you find the words to describe and think about what it means to be part of humanity and part of the universe.

This is a "must buy" for those wishing to more fully integrate body mind and spirit and move toward total consciousness. Ms. Betz masterfully brings together ancient and complex,current wisdom in a very understandable way. The book is very elegantly written and straightforward in its approach. Personal experiences are beautifully used to help define key concepts.
As a person who only buys e-books, I strongly encourage you to buy this in the paper format because you will want to underline passages, make notes in the margins and refer to it on a regular basis. This book will become a treasured companion on your life journey.

As a long-term reader of Harry Dent

In 1994 I read Harry Dent's "Great Boom Ahead" and it was extraordinarily prescient... he foresaw the demographics-based boom of the late 90s and early 2000s as well as our current economic depression. I went on to buy all his other books and they provide invaluable predictions on demographic-based economic conditions all over the world and over the next few decades.

Harry Dent also provides valuable insights into emerging technologies and business processes.

As long as you follow him on those areas, you will do fine.

But... if you follow his investment advice on equities, inflation and commodities you WILL lose a lot of money (his predictions on stock market valuations were awful as was the performance of his various financial funds).

Solid Overview - Excellent Research. Why It's Worth Your Time to Read and Share

Inflation versus Deflation. It's one of the most hotly contested topics in economic and financial circles. As a college instructor and business writer, there are a few authors that I always make a point of reading...Dent is one of them in part because of his deflationary position. He is an unapologetic, hard-core deflationist...I'm not, but there is a great deal of value in keeping an open mind and considering all points of view.

However, Dent is also a superb researcher with a focus/concentration upon demographic research which is worth the time and effort to read in its own right. Unlike many authors that fail to provide sufficient references or resources for their claims (ie, opinions), Dent takes great pain to substantiate all conclusions with research, data, articles and graphics while remaining reader-friendly and engaging.

The first section of the book covers basic economic and fiscal theory, history and the expected "how we got here"...depending upon your school of thought, you may agree or disagree with some of the assumptions but the data is equally fresh and relevant. Dent does a stellar job with this section and really goes above and beyond the same old stale data to truly paint a picture of the madness gripping both this nation and the globe.

Next, the book covers what "to do" and what "not to do" with an emphasis on small business owners rather than merely individual investors. Both are included which is a nice change from solely a personal finance perspective.

Finally, there are pages upon pages of references for those interested in pursuing additional readers...as well as the "sales pitches". Now, as for the "sales pitches"...these are a modern irritation which I've never quite learned to live with. There are sporadic insertions inviting the reader to sign-up for a free webinar, newsletter or other throughout the book with several pages of pitches at the end of the book. Aside from that, the authors are fairly restrained and do not skimp on information nor require the reader to participate in sales to access "the meat" of the issue.

As for topics covered...the author(s) make some compelling points regarding deflation at least in the short-term then relate how various investments will perform in light of these assumptions. Real estate, bonds, the stock market at large, foreign investments, small business ownership, multiple streams of income etc are each reviewed. Special emphasis is placed upon retirement planning as well as various other demographic cohorts and associated spending patterns. An excellent overview of government retirement obligations and implications on retirees, future taxation, benefits etc is a "must read" for everyone!

All in all, a well researched book that is well worth the time and effort to read even if you do not agree fully with some of the basic assumptions (ie, rationality for example) or suggested course of action.

Must read to understand current crisis -- and prepare for it

The Great Crash is Harry Dent's best book, and I strongly recommend it.

Economic doomsaying is nothing new. Howard Ruff and others sold a lot of books in the 1970s advising people to buy gold and silver to survive the "certain" financial disaster that never happened.

And many others now are predicting either hyperinflation or deflation will soon destroy the world's economy.

Dent is different because he doesn't just rail against excess government spending like an Old Testament prophet, but points out a dimension of society ignored by most economists: demographics.

In the late 1980s, while the perennial Chicken Littles were claiming the sky would fall because of the size of the government's budget then, Dent said the 1990s and 2000s would be an economic boom time. Why? Because the baby boomer generation would be entering its greatest earning and spending years.

He also pointed out (yes, 20 years ago) that this would end around 2010 or so, and there'd be a crash, a depression that would probably dwarf the 1930s lasting until around 2024.

We've lived through the boom, and now we're entering the crash, so that's what this book is about.

The theme of this book is that the huge amount of debt we've created at all levels from you and me to all developed country governments -- combined with the aging of the baby boomers and the consequent change in their spending and investing patterns -- is going to slow the world's economic growth for years to come.

In fact, it's going to create a situation that frightens the powers that be --justifiably -- far more than inflation:

Deflation.

Much of the book is taken up with examining the history of the crisis. The government and personal debt that so frightened people in the 1970s is, interestingly, a tiny blip compared to current levels of debt.

Thanks to the financial crisis as individuals we have less debt than in 2008, but still far too much -- especially mortgages on houses that aren't worth what we paid for them. Companies owe too much. State and local governments owe too much. The federal government owes too much. (Not even counting the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare). China and Japan owe too much. And, we've learned recently, many European countries owe too much.

There's no way we're going to pay off the trillions of dollars owed around the world.

Much of it will have to written off. That's the purpose of depressions -- to wring excess debt out of the system, so we can get on with building the next boom time.

But because it's painful, politicians are determined to avoid it. That's why the chairman of the US Federal Reserve System is working overtime to create new dollars, to keep the current system running.

Many current financial doomsayers look at how the government is running the printing presses overtime and are predicting runaway inflation.

Dent says you can't force 60 year old boomers to stop saving for retirement and buy new cars, houses and gadgets -- especially when they're afraid of losing their jobs.

Therefore, once the Fed's extraordinary efforts to keep the economy going fail (and that appears to have started), the crash is going to be deflationary.

That means continued high unemployment, lower prices in general, a collapse in the price of gold, and (wonder of wonders), higher interest rates leading to . . . (drumroll!) . . . a strong US dollar.

Given the current state of the euro (and the determination of Japan's central bank to keep the yen from going up in value), that doesn't sound quite as crazy now as it would have last year.

Dent gives advice on surviving (and profiting from) the crash that is so different than what you usually hear (and ironic given the S&P's recent revaluation of the US government's credit rating) that not everybody will agree with it.

This is a book many will argue with. However, you can't beat Dent on the facts. He backs up everything he says.

You can argue his interpretation, and his conclusion that we're in for a period of deflation -- while most are telling you to buy gold to hedge against hyperinflation.

The foundation of investment risk management is diversification. Placing your "bets" entirely on either hyperinflation or deflation risks the other happening (or, incredible as it seems, neither -- the world's economy has been muddling along for decades, so maybe it will somehow continue to do so), so I stand by my advise in Bring on the Crash! A 3-Step Practical Survival Guide: Prepare for Economic Collapse and Come Out Wealthier to invest in things that people need whether the economy and the markets are up or down.

(Hint: people need food and energy to survive, but NOT gold.)

The problem with predicting the future is that things happen you don't predict. I wouldn't use Dent's projections to "trade" the stock market. He has a poor short-term record. He predicted that before this crash came, the stock market would experience a boom that would dwarf the late 1990s. We know that never materialized.

But he has a great long-term, "big picture" record. Before you sell all your stocks and bonds to buy gold, you need to read his arguments for deflation.

Essential if you wish to have the option of a peaceful death

All of my friends over 60 agree on one thing: if they are terminally ill, or in continual pain or distress, they want the option to end life peacefully, quickly, and with certainty. For years, Derek Humphry's Final Exit has been the go-to book on this topic. The Peaceful Pill Handbook is similar, but it has a grading system that evaluates each method according to several criteria, such as reliability and freedom from pain. In addition, it provides practical information about where to obtain medications, gases, and other supplies necessary to achieve one's goal of a peaceful and painless death. Legal issues and strategies are discussed.

If you purchase this title, be aware that it is designed to work hand-in-hand with an online service that provides updated information under a separate subscription. Either one, by itself, does not paint the complete picture.

The unfortunate truth is: many people put off assembling these resources and thinking through their approach until they are no longer able to do so, then die the agonizing death they wished to avoid. This book can serve as a foundation for assembling the resources for achieving a peaceful death if and when the situation arises.

Necessary Information

As the population ages and some become really sick, there should be a way out that is both peaceful and painless. I don't know why this is such a controversial topic. It will become THE topic as baby boomers age. I highly recommend reading this book even if you are not considering ending your life right now. You always want be prepared if it becomes necessary. The most important part of the book to me is how to obtain the drug Nebutal. This is by far the best solution but it requires a lot of effort to obtain it. It is just ridiculous that your pet is entitled to a peaceful death with the use of this drug but you are not. Bravo to the authors of The Peaceful Pill Handbook for the work they are doing.

Often Opinionated, Occasionally Pedantic, Always Entertaining

Expecting an update of Patrick Smith's earlier book, Ask the Pilot: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel, I was surprised to see a completely different book. Yes, he still answers questions that passengers are curious about, such as how dangerous is turbulence, and what is in the air supply in the cabin, but he goes into many other topics that are of interest to people who enjoy flying. He discusses airline logos and liveries (the paint jobs on the planes) and airline names.

Smith is often pedantic and always opinionated, and it all makes for an entertaining book. He has some definite thoughts about the service on airlines, which is a little surprising, since he is a pilot for a major U.S. airline (but he doesn't say which one), and he also has some comments about passengers, which are usually less strident, such as his puzzlement over why sudoku is so popular. Just don't get him started on airport security.

One important reason Smith's book may appeal to more people than a straightforward question and answer book would, is that Smith is not only an industry professional, but he's often a passenger, traveling for fun, so he knows what it's like to sit in coach. This dual point of view, which is apparently not very common among airline employees, many of whom don't care to travel on their own time or dime, gives Smith more perspective, so he's not just the lecturer here, he knows your travelin' pain.

Not only does he travel, he enjoys airports, flying, and seeing new places. He intersperses his question and answer sections with musings on travel. Most entertaining, in my opinion, were his ramblings on questions of design, such as airline logos and slogans.

Smith is a little too honest to completely allay your fears about flying, but I appreciate the straight talk and it gives him a lot more credibility than if he told you not to worry, he's got it covered up in the cockpit. He does have it covered, but there are no guarantees, and he's weathered a couple of hairy experiences.

Although you might want to save those sections for when you're on terra firma, much of the book would be quite diverting while you're stuck in the middle seat.

For the real airplane lovers...

Are you a nervous flyer? Are you someone who'd rather drive than fly? Are you someone who doesn't get excited looking at the lights of planes as they line up in the night sky outside a busy airport, coming in for a landing, one after the other? On the other hand, do you know what the terms "OAG", "triple 7", and "Runway Two-niner" refer to? If you're the latter and not the former, you'll enjoy Patrick Smith's new book, "Cockpit Confidential".

Patrick Smith - the name "Smith" is a nom-de-plume - is an airline pilot and blogger, who operates out of Boston. He used to blog for SALON magazine but I'm not sure he still writes for them. In any case, he has his own website, askthepilot.com, and this new book. His previous one, "Ask the Pilot: Everything You Need to Know About Flying", was published in 2004. Smith has been been a pilot and in love with all forms of air travel since, as a child living in Boston, he'd sit on the Revere beach and watch in awe as planes landed at nearby Logan Airport. He grew up to make a living as first a pilot for a commuter carrier - flying up and down the Atlantic seaboard and all around New England - and then he "graduated" to flying cargo jets for a freight airline. Finally, he's now flying for an international passenger airline. (I think it might be Delta, from what I've been able to glean from his writing. Or, if not, American.) He has been subjected to layoffs during his career and is quite honest about how he - and other pilots - struggle with the on-going airline politics and economic ups-and-down that make a pilot's career somewhat haphazard.

Okay, Patrick Smith and I are airline fanatics. And, probably so are most people reading this review. Most of us fly a lot - Smith is lucky that he gets paid to do so - and we like to see new places. We're also fascinated by the arcane of the airline industry - old tickets from the 1940's and clips from newsreels of passengers boarding a plane in the 1950's outfitted in suits and ties and hats. We know what local airlines were swallowed up by what larger airlines, and we know airport codes. Patrick Smith is talking to US in his book. We "get" him, and he "gets" us.

His new book talks about his own, long love of flying. He writes about how difficult it is to "catch on" in the airline industry, and how that industry has weathered crashes - both physical and economic - and the changing requirements of the TSA. Smith doesn't like the TSA - who does? - and is not shy in giving some recommendations which might not please the politically-correct among us. Looking at the September 11th terrorist attacks in particular, he talks about how the TSA and other government groups reacted by imposing the wrong "rules" in the hopes of making airplane travel "safer". "Safer" than what? Smith recounts the many terror attacks and hijackings of airplanes and airports in the 1970's and 1980's that we've seem to have forgotten. Is the taking away of a butter knife from the flight bag of pilot Patrick Smith by over-zealous TSA officials going to make the plane and the passengers Smith is going to fly be any "safer"? Hell, no. And what about those stupid restrictions on 4oz of toothpaste and mouthwash? Good lord, it's half the battle of flying today just getting through TSA security.

Author/pilot Patrick Smith covers Sept 11th and many other subjects in his new book. It's not a book most readers will be particularly interested in, but for those of us who read his blog, look-in-awe at his YouTube videos of night-landings at JFK taken from the cockpit, and enjoy flying and the history of flying, this book's for us.

If you are a road warrior and aviation aficionado, as I am, you won't learn much that is new from this very easy to read tome. On the other hand, if you don't know much about how the airline industry works or what goes on in the cockpit, you will learn a great deal. The author covers a lot of ground and never gets too technical for the average reader. Well worth the price of the Kindle edition.
