State of the art for Digital Negatives and alternative printing

This new book represents the state of the art in producing digital negatives to be used for a variety of alternative printing processes, including platinum, palladium, and others. I have used the procedures and tools presented in this book to work my own way through the process of creating negatives and making fine palladium prints, so I have proven that it works. The use of the QTR RIP as defined in the book is the best way today to get repeatable print quality and tonality for making negatives, allowing me to spend more time on the creative side of editing images in Photoshop (or wherever you choose).

The structure of the book also allowed me to spend time understanding the details of curve creation necessary for getting the right tones in the negative, but also lets me jump to chapter 4 and just follow his procedures, use his curves, and get started without slugging through the measurements that the authors spent years doing for us.

Plus the ending sections of the book give lots of examples and suggestions for other printing processes, including adding color to palladium or platinum prints with the same printer used to make the negative. It's very clear and inspiring.

As a direct result of the content of this book, I am now making the finest prints I can make in Palladium. This book takes the process out of the hands of the select few who have more time than I to solve the trials and tribulations of this process, and puts it where I can simply make beautiful prints. It's a whole new world...

Inclusion: A Very Practical Guide

Chris Boyle makes big claims in his introduction to the text. I've read many texts that claim to provide both a theoretical background and a practical approach to successful inclusion, so I was a little sceptical. I must say, though, that this is a great resource. The chapters, especially the one by Roger Slee, are engaging, and the third section on 'Overcoming barriers to successful inclusion' actually provides very clear and accessible practical information.

What works in inclusion: An ideal mix of theory and practice

From the outset, Boyle and Topping claim this book has `no rival publication' in the field of inclusive education. As an educator and research student working in this area I was cynical, however after reading the book I agree it has much to offer educators and researchers alike.
The first section focuses on theories of inclusive education and challenges the reader to think beyond what the term `inclusion' has come to mean. The chapters by Topping and Slee I found particularly interesting, with the concepts of social inclusion and human rights, and exclusion discussed respectively. The next section provides practical ideas for the implementation of inclusive practices, both at the classroom and whole school level. There are ideas that can be taken away and implemented immediately (such as the Student Log offered by Ashman), and others to be thought and talked about, before being developed into everyday classroom and school-wide practices (collaborative practices discussed by both Boyle and Deppeler). The final section acknowledges the challenges of inclusion faced everyday in our classrooms and schools, and provides some practical ideas to deal with the things we can control, such as differentiating the curriculum, and provides hope for those that we cannot.
The book concludes with a challenge for the reader to go away and `actually do something different'. The concepts and ideas discussed by the contributors left me with the desire and confidence to not only make some changes in my classroom and school practices, but to reflect upon and reconceptualise aspects of my understandings about inclusive education.

About the Author
Dr. David Nunan is Director of the English Centre and Chair Professor of Applied Linguistics, University of Hong Kong. He is well known for his innovative methodology and his remarkable ability to bring to the classroom a variety of activities that will enhance students' oral production. He is a past president of International TESOL, and has published numerous journal articles and texts including the core series Atlas, Expressions, and GO FOR IT! and the skills series Listen In, all for Heinle. His professional titles with Heinle include Second Language Teaching & Learning and Pursuing Professional Development. The Business Review Weekly selected him as the 7th most influential Australian in Asia.

Dr. Kathleen M. Bailey received her M.A. in TESL and her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles. She is a professor of Applied Linguistics at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS), in Monterey, California, and a TESOL professor at Anaheim University. She teaches courses on language assessment in both of those programs. Dr. Bailey's research interests include teacher education, supervision and development; language assessment; classroom research; and research methodology. She received the James E. Alatis Award for service to TESOL and the Heinle Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a two-time recipient of the Allen Griffin Award for Excellence in Teaching in Monterey County. She also received the Leslie Eliason Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Monterey Institute. From 1998-1999, Dr. Bailey was the president of TESOL. She served a total of seven years on the TESOL Board of Directors. Previously she served on the TOEFL Research Committee. Since 2009 she has been the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TIRF - The International Research Foundation for English Language Education, as well as President of that foundation. In 2014 she was elected to the presidential line of the American Association for Applied Linguistics.

Comprehensive approaches to classroom research

Like the title say, this book is a comprehensive compendium of approaches for language teachers to conduct classroom research. It covers action research, ethnography, surveys, observation and other methodologies, with overall bent toward qualitative approaches. I bought the book as an up-to-date reference to guide a PhD thesis, and it did not disappoint. Very readable, full of examples and highly critical of appropriate and inappropriate use of research methods.

It could be the pilot script for a sitcom: a pastor hires an atheist to help him critique several Christian churches throughout the United States. For the authors, however, this experiment was no joke. Henderson, a veteran Protestant minister, truly believes that evangelism requires listening to the good, the bad and the ugly about Christianity in order to be a better minister. So he hired Casper, an atheist copywriter and musician, to serve as "fresh eyes" and observe how a variety of Christians engage the Divine through worship. Their travels took them to a mission-minded church, an Emergent church and to Joel Osteen's megachurch, among others. In the book, Henderson peppers his partner with questions about each service, and Casper comments on everything from preaching to music to the geographical location of the churches. The take-home point, which is simultaneously simple, profound and of great importance to Christianity is, "Why are there such glaring discrepancies among churches regarding what it means to be a follower of Christ?" The two authors include some banal dialogue at times, but this is a minor distraction. Anyone interested in contemporary evangelism, especially pastors, will enjoy and learn from this humorous and heartening travelogue. (Apr.)

About the Author
Jim Henderson is cofounder and executive director of Off The Map, a nonprofit organization focused on reinventing evangelism by encouraging Christians to connect with people in small, ordinary, and doable ways. He and his wife, Barb, have been involved in church planting, pastoring, and leadership development for over twenty-five years. They have three children and live in Seattle.

Matt Casper is a marketing copywriter, a freelance writer, a guitar slinger / rock singer, an avid reader, and a halfway decent cook. His dream job is "gadabout . . . maybe raconteur." He is happily married to Yvonne and is a proud, hands-on father of Evelyn and Cole. He and his family live in San Diego.

Great book. Extremely relevant for "Christians"

Why do so few people who consider themselves Christians not act like Jesus?

This book doesn't provide answers so much as evidence to consider. The Great News about the "Good News" is that there are churches like the Lawndale church in Chicago that seem to take being a disciple of Jesus Christ seriously. Thanks to this book for helping me to learn about them.

If we who follow Jesus can lose the jargon, lose the love of possesions, our personal safety, accept the criticism of those who have legitimate concerns and give more than we can "afford" to the hungry, homeless and poor, we can live up to the example of the One we follow.

If we help others because Jesus did, not just as a tool for evangelism, but strictly because Jesus did, people will want to know why. And we stand the chance of receiving The Best Reward: a "well done; good and faithful servant" from the King of Kings.

Really a good read but keep things in perspective

I just finished the book today (and this is my very first review). It's a quick read. Not much as far as in-depth analysis. In reality it's only the first impressions of someone who is not familiar with church culture. In some ways it feels like the script from a reality tv show. Funny, interesting, but something of substance is missing.
That being said, I think what is worth thinking about the book are exactly those first impressions, particularly the line, "Is this what Jesus told you guys to do." That, I think is, how the book cashes out. But I must admit I was torn...

One one hand, there are certain ancient traditions that Christians still practice today (the sacraments) that would be hard for any person outside of the Christian community to completely understand. In fact, it would be presumptuous for us to conclude that someone who is not a follower of Christ would understand theological concepts such as substitutionary atonement, imputation, justification, and sanctification. And before you shut me out because these concepts are "theological" - two things. First, pastors used to be sort of the theologian/philosopher/shepherd in their local community. They were less concerned with lights, smoke machines, and what have you, and really concerned about the state of people's souls. Second, these concepts work themselves out in how we live the Christian life in practical and often mundane ways. There's no way around this.

On the other hand, I agree wholeheartedly that some of the practices that are a part of church today are not ancient but are new and in my opinion, kind of goofy. Some of the things that made Casper squirm are the very things that make me squirm. As a pastor I think there is much to consider here particularly when it comes to forcing community on people in sappy ways or giving the appearance that we are always happy, or as Dallas Willard likes to say, giving the impression that Christianity works in some sort of superficial magical way. We neglect the deep work of the Spirit in revealing both our virtues and vices that are deeply habituated in our hearts and minds.

I still get the feeling that I'm in on a postmodern conversation. For instance, "I love the teachings of Jesus. I love the teachings of Buddha." I'm not sure how to make sense of that. There are other hints that the Christian faith is not necessarily a reservoir of knowledge but rather one simply accepts it by faith. I'm not comfortable with that. I certainly understand why Jim would hold back and not "befriend" Casper so as to debate him about the nature of truth. I agree that we are not looking for certainty (like Descartes) but the tradition of Christianity is that you could know certain things were true without acting like a pompous jackass. If you're confused read J.P. Moreland's chapter 5 in "The Kingdom Triangle."

That being said, I think the book is worth reading. In fact, I laughed out loud in quite a few places agreeing wholeheartedly with Casper's thoughts. It's given me pause to think about ministry, my heart in all of this, and most importantly God's heart for people.

I totally enjoyed this book through and through. I could not recommend it enough. I am buying copies for our staff for us to read together and just talk about. If you are a nuts and bolts kind of person you probably would not enjoy this book but if you want to get a glimpse how an outsider sees what we do,especially on Sundays it is a great read. It is limited to just a glance at churches on Sunday mornings so some will feel like it is a bit unfair but if you can get past that and just enjoy the humor and also the great question Casper asks, " Is this really what Jesus asked you to do Jim?" you will be challenged. One of my all time favorite books.

James Morton, a former defense lawyer in England, is one of Britain's leading experts on crime. He is the author of more than 20 books, including Brilliant Bread. Susanna Lobez is an Australian broadcaster and former actor and barrister. She has been a legal specialist broadcaster on the radio show The Law Report and on the television show Law Matters. greed or temptation too great to resist

James Morton and Susanna Lobez have written a number of Australian true crime books together now, many of which are in anecdotal format. Whilst BENT tends towards that style again, it is considerably more detailed and employs a much clearer narrative connection than many of the earlier books this reviewer has read. As a result of this, it's a much stronger, considerably more informative read than originally expected.

Even when you realise that there's been an extensive culture of corruption throughout not just the Police in Australia since First Fleet Days, BENT really brings home how extensive, how protected and how blatant much of the corruption has been. Not just in the obvious locations such as Queensland in the Bjelke-Petersen era, and the NSW car crash of around the same time. The levels of corruption, and the length of time it was allowed to go on may have varied slightly state to state, but it is rather sobering to think that it's basically been everywhere. Whether it's disaffection, greed or temptation too great to resist, the thin line between the cops and crooks attempting to influence seems to be paper thin. Not helped by the witch hunts launched against so called whistleblowers (who let's face it are the ones who are attempting to do the right thing - yet we stigmatise / label...). What comes through so clearly is the need for leadership, supervision, guidance and intervention. Much of which is often missing, much of which seems to have been corrupted first.

BENT was fascinating and quite compelling reading. It's not a heavy academic treatise on the cause and affect, and likely ways of avoiding all corruption, but it does clarify a lot of intricacies and it certainly gives the reader a picture of the spread of the problem. And this time, because it's less choppy, and more structured and targeted it's extremely readable.

BENT leaves you considering the possible outcomes had the amount of effort, and the level of organisation that has been put into the crime side of the "policing" environments, had gone to actual crime solving.
