Managing Conflict Through Communication
Managing Conflict Through Communication fourth edition authored by Dr. Ruth Anna Abigail and Dr. Dudley D. Cahn. Dr. Abigail is a professor at the Emerita, School of Adult and Professional Studies, and Dr. Cahn is a professor at the SUNY New Paltz campus, a certified mediator and a Fulbright Scholar. This textbook is an excellent read for anyone who wishes to learn about resolving conflict using strategic steps and using the theories behind conflict to gain a better understanding of where and when the conflict began.
Managing Conflict Through Communication is an excellent read for the student although any person will be able to read the textbook and apply many of the recommendations made by the authors toward conflict management. This textbook is not filled with large hard to read words and offers practical application exercises at the end of each chapter. Abigail and Cahn have done an excellent job in defining conflict and showing the reader that we encounter conflict in our everyday lives. How we choose to address conflict is where this textbook comes into play.
Part one of the book guides us through what conflict really is, and outlines the cycles and patterns of conflict in an easy to comprehend structure. The authors introducing the different communication styles used, they define these as aggressive, assertive, non-assertive, and passive aggressive (Abigail & Cahn, 2011). In these chapters you will discover that many of the communication styles addressed are more behavior orientated, meaning how we deal with conflict (Abigail & Cahn, 2011). I found part one of the textbook very interesting and easily relatable to everyday life. Examples of previous student conflicts are highlighted in the chapters and within the "manage it" (Abigail & Cahn, 2011) portion allows the reader to take what they have learned from the reading and apply it in different case studies.
Part two of the textbook the authors lead us into managing the conflicts atmosphere. Abigail and Cahn again use excellent examples of how to manage anger and stress while keeping face through the proceedings. The reader will discover in part two that there are many ways to de-escalate a conflict by either the management of anger and stress too the third party approach of utilizing a mediation when you are at an impasse.
The third and final part of the book deals mainly with the theoretical side and enlightens the reader on the how the conflict cycle works within groups, social circles, and personal relationships. Abigail and Cahn lead you through becoming a conflict manager, their suggestions, and your creativity to resolving conflict will allow you the reader to better manage your own conflicts or at a minimum the authors give you another approach to resolving your conflicts peacefully and without violence.
Throughout the textbook "Managing Conflict Through Communication" you will find yourself looking back at past conflicts in your social and personal life. You are forced to question your approaches to those conflicts and examine how you would have addressed them differently. This book is an essential read for all walks of life. If you are in a leadership position you will find this book very enlightening as you approach conflict in the workplace. How we address conflict has a lot to say about whom we are as a person, are we hot headed, a bully, stubborn, or do we operate with a one track mind. After reading this book and participating in the associated course I visualize and approach conflict with a different outlook.

Was forced to get this for a class.

Although I don't believe in the mass extortion of students through forcing us to buy textbooks this wasn't so bad. They charged me half the price and instead of keeping it for life, I get it for 180 days! Isn't that wonderful?

A must have book - for school, professional and life

This book has a great deal of information that is well laid out and easy to understand. Of course, like all learning it is only as valuable as the learner makes it. The information and strategies must be accepted, internalized and PUT INTO PRACTICE in order to be of any real value, so that is all in the "eye of the beholder." For me, I found it was one of the better textbooks for my graduate courses (if not the BEST) and ironically, I experienced a LIFE CHANGING upheaval during the course and this book proved an invaluable resource in handling the most difficult situations of my lifetime. I am not sure where I would have been without the learning it had afforded me prior to these events. BUY IT! If you do the work, you will not be sorry.

About the Author
Wladyslaw Jan Kowalski, Researcher with the Indoor Environment Center (IEC) of Pennsylvania State University, holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering.

He has extensive experience in the designing and installing of air cleaning systems in commercial buildings and health care facilities. Consulted on numerous projects involving biodefense retrofits, mold remediation, nosocomial infection control, and residential air cleaning systems. He has assisted various equipment manufacturers with the design and testing of UVGI, filtration, ozone, ionization, and other air disinfection systems and provided support for various private, commercial, and government projects internationally. Dr. Kowalski has contributed chapters to the HVAC Handbook (McGraw-Hill) and the HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics (ASHRAE). His first book, "Immune Building Systems Technology," has received wide acclaim internationally and has become a major source book in the field of bioterrorism defense technology. Dr. Kowalski consults on air cleaning construction and retrofit projects through Immune Building Systems, Inc. (IBSI) of New York, and speaks at international conferences on issues related to disease control and biodefense. He is currently chairman of the Air Treatment Group of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) with whom he is developing a series of standards and guidelines for air treatment systems in collaboration with ASHRAE, ARI, and other professional societies.

Forget it...I want my ten bucks back!!!

This book was a remarkable disappointment. Frankly, you will likely learn far more at your first lesson that you would by reading this guide. Here are some of the highlights should you decide to drop ten dollars on this "beauty."

1)The author, Doug Werner, opens with the line "You've got to be kidding!" in bold type and then subjectively harps on and on about how fencing is a sport for a select few, always the underdog, etc etc. Really? I took up fencing as a unique way to stay fit and learn a skill sport at the same time. Never thought I was breaking down any social barriers or would have to sheepishly explain myself to my peer group.

2)Werner then rather hurriedly runs through the three disciplines of fencing: foil, epee and sabre. I was surprised that footwork barely rates a mention considering that it is one of the foundation techniques. This section stumbles a fair bit because the author decided to use only three diagrams,in the entire book,to help describe a technique-savvy sport like fencing. The more you read, the more you get the feeling that the book was thrown together in a day or two.

3)The book should have mercifully ended at page 100, but Werner decided to include a 22-page section about a rather obscure offshoot sport called "sport fencing." The take-home message is that Winsor Sport, one of his sponsors, is THE source for all of your "sport fencing" needs. It says so right on page 122 which looks much more like a full-page ad than an actual page of an instructional publication of any merit. Thank you for the infomercial.

4)Fencer's Start-Up really free falls in the next section which is Werner's 55-page journal of his fencing lessons. I am sure the idea sounded great at a meeting. Too bad the author's own immature,petulant temperament is the real showcase of this "copy filler." Werner unashamedly describes his fencing evenings laced with his own argument outbursts, temper tantrums, taunting of his fellow club members and even one episode where he threw his foil to the floor; causing the weapon to be damaged. (I should have expected this sort of angry conduct from an author who uses the "p word"[yes, that word] several times in a supposed professional text.) Like all martial arts, fencing requires a certain level of trust and respect amongst its participants. The author foolishly attempts to create the illusion that one can do "whatever you want" on the fencing piste and all will be forgotten. In the real world, this is 100% untrue. The instructors at the Cabrillo Academy may have put up with your behavior, Mr. Werner, but any other fencing club worth its salt would have shown you the door rather swiftly.

5)If you are thinking about fencing in the future, and I hope you are, welcome to one of the finest sports to be found. Shop around for a credible fencing school and purchase the best equipment you can afford. Do yourself a favor and do not buy this amateurish, laughable book. Put the $10 saved toward a mask and a foil instead. Fencing is an ancient sport dating back to the pyramids and is steeped in honor and tradition. Both of which will continue long after the author sells his equipment on-line and takes up yet another sporting conquest for profit.

I bought this as part of a birthday gift for my stepson and after flipping through it I may need to get another! Lots of pictures to show beginners how to and cute humor to keep things interesting.

I liked it a lot

I liked it a lot. It was very much what i have experienced while taking my lessons. The only thing that I did not like
was that during each chapter there was a line or phrase that was repeated.I don't know if that was by design or by accident. The description of the drills and the bouts are right on target.(No pun intended).

Wonderful calendar!

2nd year in a row I bought this calendar and love it. The format is the same as last year's calendar, except with new/different pictures for 2016, so I am repeating my review here: "Great calendar and format, and the pictures are charming. Just want to jump in every picture. I appreciate that there is a new illustration for every week. Vivid colors and quality paper. Layout with illustration and note space on left, weekly grid on right Monday - Sunday (Sat and Sun grouped together thankfully). Lots of space to write in the weekly grid. Ample space for notes in the back. Full yearly calendar in front, plus 2014 and 2016 in back for reference. Opens flat. Big, clear fonts. Just perfect. I buy engagement calendars every year and am so glad I tried this one! Will be buying more for gifts. Have previously purchased Simplicity, Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, Reading Woman, Japanese Woodblock in other years, and this year's Country Seasons is one my favs. I hope Andrews McMeel Publishing keeps making this one - it's a real winner." I love this calendar

I love this calendar! I purchased the Debbie Mumm engagement calendar for years and years, but they were discontinued a few years back. So I went looking for something else this year and found John Sloane. The pictures are beautiful, the pages are nice and thick and durable. I wish that I had discovered John Sloane and his engagement calendars years ago!

I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework

We had several up-ending events in our family life this past year, and this financial guide from Jonathan Clements has been a godsend as we navigated the financial decisions involved. I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework. When I have a specific, urgent question, I can quickly get to the topic I need because of the way the book is organized by theme and sub-topics. In this regard, it differs from all other financial guidebooks I've read. But most important of all, to me, is that the author kept his familiar personal style (I subscribed to the WSJ for two decades mainly to be able to read Clements' weekly WSJ column). My favorite, favorite part of this book is the bit where, after explaining the logic of the advice given on a topic, Clements then includes a personal section on what he actually, in his real life, has done on the matter. Having followed this author's financial writings since the early 1990s, I can tell you that whenever I have diligently and patiently followed his lead, the results have been rewarding. And whenever I have given in to my emotional worries, and deviated from his clear logic, I've come to regret it. The other aspect of this book that is extremely helpful is the detailed teaching of complicated topics in a way that allows all of us regular people out here to truly understand the fundamentals that we have to grasp if we want to successfully manage our finances.

Easy amazing read for everybody. The sooner the better; this book has it all.

Wow, talk about an easy read. Mr. Clements really broke down the world of finances' into many different areas and keeps his explanations short and to the point. He even lets you know when a part of the book will have some boring math formulas so you can skim it if it's too much for you. Anyway the main reason for the purchase of this book was to find out about social security, its new rule and when the best time to start drawing for my wife and me. This book gave many examples and on top of that gave a website that you can go to and with little information about your age and current income will tell you how much you will draw if you choose to draw at different ages. Yes, other sites do this but none of them factored in the best time for a lower earning spouse to draw on the higher earning spouses account. the site even calculated the difference you will make by drawing at different ages. Another great point for me was his advice on how to "Rebalance" my TSP. I did this and within 5 days earned over $5,000.00. My account balance has been rising daily. This book covers almost everything and the best part is that it is done in very short sections that gets the reader attention quickly and keeps it for the entire section. He even starts out by telling you how to navigate the book. There are many referrals to different companies and websites for further information. I was able to come up with several categories I was interested in and made a list of different websites to go to for more info or to possibly purchase financial products. I would recommend this book to everyone, trust me it covers anything you can think of when it comes to finances. I'm giving one to my 17 year old granddaughter. A Practical Financial Guru has Reappeared

I followed Jonathan Clements for many years through his Wall St. Journal (WSJ) column. In my opinion he had the clear straightforward answers to everyday financial questions that everyone encounters. I lost a compass for my financial life when he left the WSJ and I was so happy to see that he has reappeared with his Money Guide series. Now I have a single reference guide to pull off of my shelf when I have a question about a financial issue. This is far more effective than trying to locate the appropriate yellowing WSJ clipping that I have kept on file over the years.

How much do I treasure Mr. Clements' advice? Well, my son graduated from college last spring and he now has enough money to make his first stock investment. He conferred with me over the past few days about how to go about making the best decision. Once we had talked through what he should do and he had made a decision he placed a trading order. He then asked me whether I could recommend a book that he could consult to get further advice. I pulled my copy of "Money Guide 2016" from my desk, held it up to my video conference camera, and told him that I would order a copy for him as soon as we finished our video conference. I did.

As you might have guessed, my investing advice was heavily influenced by years of following the insights and recommendations of Jonathan Clements. I recommend that you avail yourself of his knowledge as well.
