About the Author

Donald Treadwell earned his master’s degree in communication from Cornell University and his PhD in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

            He developed and taught communication research classes in classroom and online settings as well as teaching courses in organizational communication, public relations and public relations writing.

            He has published and presented research on organizational image, consumer response to college names, health professionals’ images of AIDS, faculty perceptions of the communication discipline, and employers’ expectations of newly-hired communication graduates. His research appears in Communication Monographs, Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, Public Relations Review, Journal of Human Subjectivity, and Criminal Justice Ethics.

            He is professor emeritus, Westfield State University, and has international consulting experience in agricultural extension and health communication.

This is the second book from Karen that I read. I love her approach and writing style in communicating the information. This is one of the most helpful books psychology I have read. Gives more information and useful material than a typical pop physiology book in understanding personalities, the underlying fear/drive of each type.

Moving Towards Against or Away from People

As I understand it, the theory presented in this book runs as follows: There's a gap between our actual self and the image we have of our self (our idealized self) which causes an inner conflict which we tend to deny and make unconscious, but then shows its presence through symptoms (anxiety, unhappiness, health issues etc). The conflict is channeled into three types of personalities (Chap 3-5): Those who move towards, against or away from people. Those who move towards people tend to be compliant and want people to like them (pleasers, etc). Those who move against people tend to be aggressive, detest any sign of weakness and believe in the law of the jungle. Those who move away from people detach and seek for a form of self-sufficiency and to live in some kind of ivory tower with a "Do-Not-Disturb" sign on their doors. "Where the compliant looks at his fellow man with the silent question, 'Will he like me?' - and the aggressive type wants to know, 'How strong an adversary is he?' or 'Can he be useful to me?' - the detached person's first concern is 'Will he interfere with me? Will he want to influence me or will he leave me alone?' (pg 80). All three types are considered neurotic due to their rigidity and compulsiveness. A healthier person can flexibly give and receive love, stand up for himself when needed and withdraw at times for needed rest and reflection. All three types also employ a variety of defenses to deal with this interior conflict. Completely repress the actual self and identify fully with the idealized self (Chap 6). Externalize the conflict (Chap 7 fully devoted to this). Chap 8 covers the following defenses: blind spots (not seeing what's obvious to others), compartmentalizing (creating boxes and ignoring contradictions), rationalizing (self deception by reasoning), excessive self control (stressfully using will power to keep conflicts at bay), arbitrary rightness (picking a side in order to not deal with the inconvenience of doubt), elusiveness (creating confusion) and cynicism. Chap 9 - 12 looks at what happens when inner conflicts remain unresolved. This richly articulated and at times quite deep book, which apparently has been credited for inspiring other authors, could very well be "The Mother of All Self Help Books."

Worth the trouble

One thing the other reviews don't quite emphasize enough- these exercises are just plain ol' unpleasant to do. It is not fun to sit in a lunge with one leg held out to the side and slowly move it up and down a few inches 50-100 times. The only justification for this torture is that it works. I don't have any interest in exercise per se, just in being strong and looking as good as possible. (And not limping around like Quasimodo the first three hours of the day) I have been doing these exercises for three months. I have lost 5 pounds, and look like I have lost 20. I do 50 repetitions rather than 100 and do it 4-5 times a week, as it is less boring for me to do less more often. It helps to memorize the sets and then review the book or video every once in a while to make sure one is doing it correctly and not dropping any of the exercises. Read the instructions carefully initially so you don't hurt yourself doing it wrong.

Simply the BEST - BUT ...

First of all, these exersizes are brilliant. I have tried all different kinds of (more modern) methods, but I keep coming back to Callanetics. If you want a leaner, more beautiful body, this is the book for you. Callanetics is simply the BEST workout program around and will probably last forever.
But! And here comes the big BUT. This book might be a tad misleading if you expect instant results. It promises 10 years younger in 10 days, well, probably that will work for some, but definitely not for the out-of-shape-not-in-the-early-twenties-anymore-type-of-person. When I started Callanetics, years ago now, I was quickly deterred by the slow results and quit the program after the promised 10 hours. I told every one the program didn't work.
Until I decided to start again, one step at the time now, and stick with it for a few months. Then, suddenly, the results came and I did indeed get a trim(mer), slim(mer), strong(er) body. No miracles mind you, but enough results to be noticeable.
So yes, get the book today, but make sure you stick with it for at least a few months before you render your judgement!

A great companion book for the Callanetics video tapes, it will give you a little background on Callan, and how she created her unique method of exercise.
The photos are astounding. Chapter 4, "Portfolio of Proof", has untouched back and profile views of bikini clad women, as well a two men, as they progress from class to class. There is a sequence of photos from the 1st to the 19th class on one woman that shows an amazing transformation.
There is a smoothness to the body toning. Think Cyd Charisse, not Martina Navratilova. If you want that "super athlete" look, Callanetics is not for you. There is no bulk in the results, no accentuated muscles...just a longer, leaner line.
The book takes you through the entire 1-hour program, demonstrated by Callan's students. Chapter 16 is "The 15 Minute Maintenance Plan", and there are chapters on "Taking Care of Your Back", "You're Never Too Old to Have a Fabulous Body", and more.
The final chapter is "The Advanced Program", and it's demonstrated by Callan, with her remarkable strength, flexibility, and grace. The woman is a marvel.
Callanetics has been around for 2 decades, but I just heard about it recently. I've been doing the "Quick Callanetics" for a week, and already feel taller, stronger, and more agile, after only 20 minutes a day. Also, though the exercises are very hard and "burn", one doesn't get muscle soreness afterwards, and more importantly, I haven't felt even a twinge of pain in my knees, which has always been a problem with other exercise programs...so Callanetics is (better late than never !) a thrilling find for me.

As brilliant as her last....

Firstly - If you haven't read Sane New World: A User's Guide to the Normal-Crazy Mind by Ruby Wax then you MUST (but you don’t need to have read it to enjoy this book...).

A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled is yet another hilarious, well written and thought provoking read by Ruby Wax.

The word Mindfulness is everywhere at the moment - and Ruby explains exactly what it means, how to do it and why it’s so important to live "in the moment". The book includes a six week mindfulness course, which has been put together with the help of her Oxford university tutor, Professor Mark Williams - this includes mindful thinking, mindful movement, mindful eating. I'm guilty at not eating mindfully - unwrapping a chocolate bar and practically swallowing it hole without even looking at it let alone really tasting it.

You can tell she has really done her research and credit must also go to Joanna Bowen, the editor, who also edited Sane New World. The book is laced with humour and Ruby's own experiences - she is brilliant at making the complex subject of the brain easier to understand. There is something for everyone in this book - parents / teenagers / teachers.... and even if you aren't one of those (I'm not), it is one of those books I will go back to again and again as it’s such a good manual for mindful and healthier living.

It’s no wonder she has earned herself an OBE.

Mind how you go

Let me begin by saying that I'm an unequivocal fan of Ruby Wax's mindfulness work & think her OBE for services to mental health is well deserved.

As Ruby herself says, she is talking to the 5% of the world's population which is adequately housed and fed and which has worked itself into a state of anxiety & frazzlement.

You may remember Ruby as a comedian on TV. She also wrote much of Absolutely Fabulous with Jennifer Saunders. She's funny in my view.

What she also is is very very smart & she has studied neuroplasticity (how the brain can change) at Oxford and has also suffered from depression & anxiety for decades.

"Mindfulness" has been captured most notably in the adult colouring book craze (which I also like BUT think it is more 'escapim' or 'relaxation' than what mindfulness is really about!

In her first book on the subject, Sane New World, Ruby explored how she became a student of mindfulness (she already had a degree in psychology from Berkeley) and explained how the brain works and the science behind mindfulness.

I found it ENORMOUSLY helpful when going through a very anxious time myself. I went to a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) course and was introduced to the 'doing' part - the practice - like any muscle the brain needs to be exercised to stay strong.

Then I bought a book by Ruby's Oxford professor, Mark Williams, and it went through the practice step by step & also covered the brain science stuff.

I saw Ruby's show based on her Sane New World book in Sydney ladt year. I try to remember to incorporate the meditative practice each day.

So now, this book. Well, let's say, given all the above, I didn't need to read it.

But the good thing is, if you haven't read Sane New World, or Prof Williams' books, you don't need to read them - you can hop straight in here.

This book has Ruby's trademark wit - though she really did use her funniest stories in her previous book - compulsive cordering of scatter cushions online, and making a 4th rate tv show diving with sharks come to mind.

It also repeats / explains the brain stuff, which I find fascinating.

The middle section has a 6 week program for practicing mindfulness - it is easy to do - but bloody hard to make yourself actually do every day! It is very similar to what is in Prof William's book - tho his also includes a CD for guided meditations.

Ruby adds some helpful advice about helping children and teens with overcoming anxiety with mindfulness - and I reckon that's wonderful. The world is now full of highly anxious kids & adolescents!

So, a book I'd thoroughly recommend to a layperson but not essential if you've already explored mindfulness and got some resources.

You could jump in & use the 6 week program and save heaps by not going to a course (I won mine in a raffle!!!)

And does it work? I reckon it does. Or maybe it's just retirement! If you are happily retired you may already notice birdsong & smell the roses! Or maybe retirement is enhanced for being aware that the birdsong & roses are there to be noticed???

    About the Author

    Vallath has more than 26 years of IT experience including over 20 years using Oracle products. Vallath is an Oracle ACE Director and president of All India Oracle Users Group (www.aioug.org). He has worked on a variety of database platforms for small to very large implementations, designing databases for high volume, machine critical, real time OLTP systems. His expertise is with Oracle RAC. Vallath released his second book titled Oracle 10g RAC, Grid, Services and Clustering in March 2006 and has co-authored his third book titled Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) November 2007, from Oracle Press. Vallath currently provides independent consulting services in the areas of capacity planning, high availability solutions and performance tuning of Oracle environments through Summersky Enterprises (www.summersky.biz) with operations in USA and India. He has successfully completed over 100 successful small, medium and terabyte sized RAC implementations for reputed corporate firms. His recent experiences are with archiving historical data for datamarts on Exadata servers.
