About the Author
Sir Michael Caine has won two Academy Awards during his distinguished five-decade career on screen. Knighted in 2000, Caine was born in working-class Sussex, England, and served in the British Army before landing his first film role in "Zulu" (1964). His films include "The Ipcress File", "Alfie", "Hannah and Her Sisters", "The Cider House Rules", and "Harry Brown". He is the author of the bestselling "What's It All About? "and "The Elephant to Hollywood". He lives in Surrey with his wife of thirty-seven years.

A back to basics approach to acting in film

I first saw the actual physical course on the BBC. As such you should also get yourself a DVD set, if available. The book stands well on its own though. It really focuses on practical professional techniques in terms of acting, and how to relate to the people around you, including the director, on set. It also contains practical advice on how to memorize your lines and prepare for a performance in general. All in all, a good back to basics approach to acting in film and a thorough enjoyment to read, considering various anecdotes that add to the reading experience.

THIS GUY KNOWS WHERE IT'S AT!

I've been studying acting for several years and some of the jargon can get pretty 'high brow' trying to explain themselves. Michael Caine does not do that. He approaches the career of film acting from in the trenches with little diamonds of insight studded throughout. I especially like his advice to a film director when the director asked him to fall into a hole telling him that it was not dangerous. "You do it first," was Michael's reply. Fantastic. Shortly after reading Mr. Caine's book, I did a scene where I had to fall into freezing water after being shot. The director assured me that it was safe and the water held no obstacles. I gave him Michael's reply and after hemming and hawing a few minutes he sent a PA in to assure me that the water was deep enough and had no obstacles. Thank you Michael Caine! If your passion is film acting, you will get a kick out of this read. Salute!

A great book, straight to the point! It is a book about movie acting and it will teach you exactly that - how movie acting is different from acting in the theater. Michael Cane uses a lot of vivid examples to prove his point and to give a number of priceless tips on how to improve your acting. His passion for acting is contagious and inspiring!

About the Author
Richard Johnsonbaugh is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems, DePaul University, Chicago. Prior to his 20-year service at DePaul University, he was a member and sometime chair of the mathematics departments at Morehouse College and Chicago State University. He has a B.A. degree in mathematics from Yale University, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Oregon, and an M.S. degree in computer science from the University of Illinois, Chicago. His most recent research interests are in pattern recognition, programming languages, algorithms, and discrete mathematics. He is the author or co-author of numerous books and articles in these areas. Several of his books have been translated into various languages. He is a member of the Mathematical Association of America.

Was a scam, missing much of the book, not in the right order; I needed to rent the hard copy and used this to start a camp fire as it wasn't a real book.

Excellent insight into the author and her work

Virginia Woolf: A Critical Memoir by Winifred Holtby is a study of the interconnection of Woof and her characters and her style of writing. Holtby is best known for writing South Riding while dying of Bright's disease. She was an ardent feminist, socialist and pacifist who published fourteen books before dying at thirty-seven.

This book is intriguing on several levels. First, it was written in 1932 while Woolf was still alive, and it concentrates on Woolf's work and the interconnectedness of the stories and with Woolf's own life. Although mentioned, Woolf's depression does not play a major role in this book and it does in many current books. Not being formally educated in English literature, I found the critique well done, informative, and not heavy handed. The examples and passages in the book illustrate Holtby thesis well.

The use of water in Woolf's life and in her books everything from The Voyage Out through The Waves (the last book written by Woolf before Holtby's book) all contain water references and themes. In Woolf's early memories of the beach at Cornwall and later tragically her death involved water. Water becomes ever present, but ever changing. It is always there; it rolls in and rolls out like the waves or life and death.

What may be more obvious to many is also brought up in Holtby's critique is Woolf’s preferences in her novels. It is not surprising that Woolf didn’t much care for plots in her writing. Not a single one of her novels had a climax. In The Voyage Out the South American jungle is nearly a copy of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Discovery of Guiana The plagiarism is Holtby explains is forgivable. The jungle setting was merely filler. In the South American town, surrounded by jungle, no wild animals are seen, in fact, nobody's even bothered by a single mosquito. The hospital is conveniently located near the hotel. The setting is simply background to Woolf.

If it isn’t plot, climax, or setting that Woolf writes about, it must be characters. Woolf spends great detail in creating characters. Holtby compares the characters to other historical novel character’s just as Jane Austen. Also interesting is that characters that reflect Woolf’s life are the best done. She struggles when she writes characters out of her station. The other thing that separates Woolf is style. Many of her writings have almost a lyrical quality to them. This is perhaps the main reason I enjoy reading Woolf.

Holtby analyzes Woolf’s writing and works. She had a particular interest in “The Mark on the Wall” and uses it often in her comparisons. Her treatment of “Kew Gardens” is quite well done. For the reader of this book a knowledge of Woolf’s writing (up until 1932) is very helpful and almost necessary. Holtby uses each work as references and comparisons and builds her case. Without knowing Mrs. Ramsey, Clarissa Dalloway, or Jacob Flanders, the reader would be lost. An excellent read for anyone familiar with, or struggling with, any of Woolf’s work.

Thought-provoking and insightful literary critique of the works of Virginia Woolf

When I first saw the subtitle - a critical memoir, I was wondering if it was going to be critical of Virginia Woolf, but as I read further I soon realized that it is a literary critique of her works along with a biography of her life (up until the time it was written, 1932).
Holtby does an astonishing job diving into Woolf's works - made me remember just how much I used to enjoy my literature classes. She also made me want to read more of Woolf's works - and I have no doubt I would get even more out of her writings now, after reading Holtby's commentary.

A Critical Memoir was published in 1932, and it can't help but haunt me that Holtby herself passed away in 1936 - only 37 years old, while Woolf died in 1941. How we lose some of our greatest writers too soon.

I would highly recommend Virginia Woolf: A Critical Memoir to anyone who has enjoyed the works of Woolf, or are interested in writing or women's history of that time.

Paul thinks dinosaurs are fun, and he conveys his enthusiasm in this well-written account of their life and times. In the first part of the book he describes how the predatory dinosaurs (meat-eating dinosaurs, as opposed to herbivorous dinosaurs) evolved, what they looked like and how they lived. He dispels some commonly held notions: dinosaurs were not cold-blooded, slow or stupid; they were, in fact, the ancestors of birds. The second part of the book is an illustrated catalogue of all important predatory dinosaurs known to date, a new reorganization of predatory dinosaur taxonomy and systematics. Dinosaur are obviously the love of Paul's life, and he sometimes makes us forget that these extraordinary creatures have been extinct for at least 65 million years. In addition, as a paleontologist who does his own illustrations, he can back up his contention that dinosaurs "look neat."

One of the First of Its Kind

Here's an interesting exercise. Conduct a literature search to identify all the SCHOLARLY books published commercially before 1986 that are devoted to special topics (e.g., infinite-dimensional vector spaces) in, say, the fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, genetics, and cellular biology. Expect to turn up items numbering in the hundreds, if not the thousands. Now, conduct a search for all the pre-1986 commercially-published scholarly books devoted exclusively to dinosaurs (henceforth, "SDBs"). You're not likely to come up with more than a single item, William Elgin Swinton's THE DINOSAURS (Thomas Murby & Co., 1934), which went out of print in 1952 but resurfaced briefly in 1968.

Astounding as it may seem, before the publication of Bob Bakker's THE DINOSAUR HERESIES (Citadel, 1986), one could not walk into any book store in the English-speaking world and purchase a TECHNICAL volume devoted entirely to dinosaur paleontology. Prior to 1986, the only such books were treatises published by state or national geological surveys, professional paleontological societies, or museum-affiliated research institutions (example: Charles Whitney Gilmore, OSTEOLOGY OF THE CARNIVOROUS DINOSAURIA IN THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL MUSEUM, Bulletin 110 of the United States National Museum [Government Printing Office, 1920]). These treatises were published in limited runs and today are rarely encountered outside of university libraries. Enthusiasts seeking copies for purchase will probably require the good offices of book dealers specializing in out-of-print scientific tracts and must expect to pay dearly.

Of course, there were scads of POPULAR books on dinosaurs published before 1986. These make strange reading today, not so much because they contain antiquated information, but because they contain so LITTLE information even by the standards of the time. Virtually every popular book on dinosaurs was written to formula: first, a chapter on the beginnings of dinosaur paleontology in 19th Century England; next, a chapter on geologic time that introduces the technical names for geochronological eras and periods but never contemplates an interval of time shorter than an epoch, so that in subsequent chapters the reader will think that various dinosaur types (say, Tyrannosaurus rex and Styracosaurus albertensis) were contemporaries (they both lived during the Upper Cretaceous, didn't they?) when in fact they were separated in time by millions of years (the GEOGRAPHIC distribution of dinosaur genera is never discussed, so that the reader hasn't a clue that Triceratops, for example, is an exclusively North American genus); then, a chapter on pre-dinosaur vertebrate evolution (now, we mustn't forget Dimetrodon!) that frequently blurs the concepts of genus and species so that the reader eventually comes away thinking that every dinosaur genus is monospecific (inevitably, the only SPECIES identified in a popular dinosaur book is [drum roll, please] Tyrannosaurus rex [Would anyone care to name ANOTHER species of Tyrannosaurus?]); finally, a chapter (yes, a WHOLE CHAPTER, usually comprising no more than 25 pages!) on dinosaurs that typically surveys ONLY those genera of which complete skeletons are on display (pre-1986, that usually meant late Jurassic and late Cretaceous dinosaurs of western North America); possibly, a chapter on Mesozoic marine reptiles (and sometimes, a chapter on Cenozoic mammals); and lastly, a chapter on dinosaur extinction.

So, since there were no SDBs, what did the pre-1986 dinosaur enthusiast do if he wanted more information than what was offered in popular books? Well, there WERE a few commercially-published scholarly volumes on vertebrate paleontology in general. The main books were: Edwin H. Colbert, EVOLUTION OF THE VERTEBRATES (John Wiley & Sons, 1980 [one chapter on dinosaurs]); Alfred Sherwood Romer, VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY, (University of Chicago, 1966 [one chapter on dinosaurs]); Romer, NOTES AND COMMENTS ON VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY, (University of Chicago, 1969 [one chapter on dinosaurs]); Romer, OSTEOLOGY OF THE REPTILES, (University of Chicago, 1956 [dinosaurs are mentioned in passing throughout the book]).

Everything changed after 1985. First, there was Bakker's book in 1986, followed by Gregory Paul's PREDATORY DINOSAURS OF THE WORLD (PDW) in 1988. And after PDW, the deluge. There are now SDBs on such specialized topics within dinosaur paleobiology as systematics, osteology, bone histology, functional morphology, physiology, reproductive biology, ichnology, and so on.

Paul's PDW has become something of a classic. As of 11/20/2009, Amazon indicates that the hardcover edition is no longer available and lists only one new copy of the paperback edition (for the alarming price of $151.09). As several other Amazon reviewers have noted, the book's contents show their age. I've had occasion to ask Paul whether he intends to produce an updated edition, but he shows little enthusiasm for the project.

PDW nevertheless makes for exceptionally good reading. Although stretches of the book are pitched at a moderately high level of technicality, most of the technicalities are well-explained and further illuminated by Paul's own outstanding anatomical drawings. Paul's writing is highly engaging, even though every so often an infelicity pops out of the text. Pp. 52 - 53: "In 1983, Michael Benton argued that protoarchosaurs and early thecondonts were not really in competition with one another, but this cannot be so because the two groups were out there squabbling over carcasses and competing for game." The preceding sentences and the illustration on p. 52 invite the suspicion that Paul meant to address thecodonts' possible competition with SYNAPSIDS rather than with protoarchosaurs. Furthermore, although the quoted passage can be rewritten to avoid fallacy, it presently stands as a locus classicus of Begging the Question. Great program

I feel great after doing this plan. I lost 15 lbs and my husband lost 12lbs. A little hard to stick with it when you have a busy schedule but definitely possible and worth it. I have been off my migraine meds and my muscle relaxers now for 4 weeks.I still get the migraines but they are more tolerable.

Juicing to Reclaim Health

Super Juice me is a well laid out plan for undertaking a a 28 Day Juicing Plan. Jason Vale is passionate about juicing as a way to recover health and he infects others with his passion. He gives a lot of tips on what to expect and how to stay on track. Reading the testimonials of people who overcame serious health issues in just 28 days of juicing convinced me to try it. I'm on day 6 of the plan and it couldn't be easier. I actually like not having to think about what I am going to eat for the day. It is all laid out. With the option of an extra juice or an avocado to see me through, I never worried about getting hungry. I would recommend this to anyone who has tried everything else and is desperate to reverse their illnesses and regain their health. Or for anyone who wants to drop a few pounds and take a break from eating.

This was a reread for me and I loved it even more than I did the first time. Everything just worked for me in this story. The plot was good, the pacing was good, the writing was smooth, the dialogue was clever, and the setting was marvellous. I loved the details of the Venice setting and the ceremony of "marriage" to the sea. The glassmaking details were fun but not overwhelming.

Salvatore and Helena are at odds because she has inherited her dead husband Antonio's (Salvatore's father's cousin) share of the Veretti family's glass factories. Antonio was much older (it's made clear early on that he and Helena never slept together, for those who might be squicked). Salvatore starts off as an angry, vengeful man who believes that Helena is a gold-digger who doesn't deserve her inheritance, but he soon comes to realize otherwise. She challenges him and neatly turns the tables on him once or twice, and he learns that he cannot bully her into leaving Venice and eventually that he really doesn't want to. He becomes oddly protective of her, and despite himself wants her to succeed. He's still a HP hero so he resists falling in love for a time, but he's never a jerk and mellows out quite a bit before he alphas up again at the end and kidnaps the heroine to keep her from leaving.

Helena is strong without being bitchy or foot-stompingly "feisty". I liked that she's tall and voluptuous, and intelligent too - she shows that she is a fast learner but doesn't unrealistically take over the whole factory and become an overnight expert. Her flair for the dramatic makes her seem more real and not too perfect. The only thing I didn't like about her was that she could eat all she wanted and not gain weight (hey, I got issues ok?). It seemed like she and Salvatore were always having dinner together, and I spent way too much time imagining all that fantastic Venetian cooking (see issues mentioned above).

Which brings me to my next point. For 2 people who start off disliking each other and are business rivals, Salvatore and Helena spend a lot of time in each other's company. There is a lot of chemistry and tension between them, and while they banter ostensibly about business, the sexual undercurrents are blazingly obvious. This is a steamier HP than most, and Salvatore and Helena do a lot of lovemaking as well as fine dining. It's very tasteful and sensuous, and fits in naturally with the story. I liked their one-upmanship, which never veers into cruelty. The devil's head was funny! There's a misunderstanding near the end of course, but even it makes more sense than these misunderstandings usually do.

With the focus so much on the hero and heroine, there aren't a lot of secondary characters. Salvatore's snobby old grandma makes an attempt to drive the wedge between them deeper at the end, explaining to Helena that Salvatore distrusts all women and sees them all as tramps. Antonio despite being dead is the strongest secondary character, coming across vividly as a charming, pleasure-loving old reprobate with a kind heart. I'm not going to say more about the ending except that it is very sweet :-)

Lovely illustrations, passable story

The illustrations of the city and the two main characters were a thing of beauty. The story was just so-so. There did not seem to be much of a basis for their falling in love other than looks, lust and out doing one another. It was just a passable good story.

A Proud and ruthless businessman; A Model with a past

Lucy Gordon has crafted a beautiful love story which both the hero and heroine giving each other a challenge......Salvatore Veretti wants what he believes is rightfully his family's Venetian glass business and the very beautiful model who was married to his cousin has inherited it! He will go to any lengths to regain back the business and to have her in his bed.

It's a battle of will and in the end it costs them both. Plain and simply it's a lovely romance, and is set in one of the most romantic cities in the world, Venice. It took me back to places I've personally visited and found memories of celebrating my own wedding anniversary.

The very talented Lucy Gordon captures the vulnerability they both have and it will bring tears to your eyes while reading their personal journey.
