From The New England Journal of Medicine
The second edition of the German textbook Dermatology is just that -- a comprehensive reference on the specialty of dermatology. Appearing nine years after the first edition, the second edition is a practical necessity. Nondermatologists may not believe it, but progress in this specialty has been rapid during the intervening years. The new genetics has been eagerly embraced, as have advances in immunology and therapeutics. The study of skin diseases and of their diagnosis and management readily lends itself to graphic images, and modern color publishing has facilitated an explosion of textbooks in this area. A good number of such books consolidate this approach by carrying the moniker ``atlas'' and as such are usually no more than expansively illustrated maps of the integument.

To go further than this and to supplement good illustrations with advice on causes, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy is another dimension altogether. Such a task can be made easier by consistency of style, facilitated by a rigorous editorial hand that keeps the number of chapter authors to a minimum. In Dermatology, the four authors accomplished this task by writing the bulk of the book themselves, on topics ranging from basic science and principles of dermatologic diagnosis to descriptions of individual dermatoses and their therapy. This is no mean feat, but one that intuitively relies on extremely broad knowledge of the specialty. Consistency benefits, but authenticity may suffer, since no four persons can write all the chapters at the level of experts in the field. One could argue, however, that the experts' ivory-tower view can at times be several standard deviations away from the norm and not pertinent to a broad readership. After all, this book is aimed at specialists and nonspecialists alike.

The world of dermatology textbooks is populated by a few well-known, multivolume heavyweights, both metaphorically and literally. Dermatology is a unique inhabitant of this world, in that it is a single, albeit bulky, volume -- a distinct advantage, since the reader knows in which volume to look for information. Although the page layout is consistent, there is room for more color figures and diagrams, but perhaps this was discounted in deference to maintaining the single-volume approach. The book itself is fairly well but not extensively referenced. At times, a somewhat endearing element of anecdote creeps into the text -- a rare phenomenon in the modern, evidence-based world. For instance, in the section on striae distensae (stretch marks), therapy is regarded as ``a bit of luck'' -- that is, the luck of not being predisposed to this scourge of pregnancy. Another example is found on the section on psoriasis. It is well known that psoriasis occurs at different frequencies in different racial groups, and it is commonly believed to be relatively rare in Native Americans. This observation is dismissed with skepticism and the statement that ``one of us ran a clinic for Navajos for a decade and saw more than enough severe psoriasis.'' Some statements are factually incorrect. Again, taking psoriasis as an example, it is stated that monozygotic twins have 90 percent concordance for psoriasis, although the widely quoted figure is closer to 70 percent. This is a minor criticism, but a reference book should be accurate. The limited authorship ensures that the book does not fall foul of another glitch of multiauthorship, in that the information presented is very current and references from 1999 are widely included.

Dermatology is increasingly a surgical specialty. Indeed, the American Academy of Dermatology has considered changing its name to incorporate a reference to dermatologic surgery, thereby emphasizing this trend. It is estimated that of patients attending a general, nonselected dermatology clinic, up to 40 percent may require some form of surgery, ranging from cryotherapy or simple elliptical biopsy to complex flap construction, previously the preserve of the plastic surgeon. The addition of a new chapter on operative technique is a welcome one; however, coverage of laser surgery in a mere 2 1/2 pages is not representative of the value and widespread use of this technique. The other new chapter is that on diagnostic issues specific to black skin, an important and difficult area. The descriptive vocabulary for dermatologic disease was primarily determined with reference to white skin. Thus, the dermatologist is faced with two problems in diagnosing and describing a rash in black skin: first, the morphologic features of common conditions such as psoriasis or atopic dermatitis may appear very different from those in white skin, and second, there are a number of dermatoses unique to black skin that are currently described within the context and confines of white-skin dermatology.

Overall, this is a valuable book that deserves a place on the shelves of most medical libraries. It is comprehensive enough in its information to benefit specialists and nonspecialists alike. After all, one can never have enough high-quality dermatology reference books.

Excellent

I have had the oppurtunity to purchase the book as a budding resident in dermatology. To my astonishment, I learnt that the book has enabled me to develop sound academic and clinical skills.
The presentation is remarkable with the text being very lavish in composition and a pleasure to read. The author has given very vivid and lucid descriptions of the entities, portraying personal opinion and trends across the continents (which the other books lack). The photographs too, are excellent. Chapters cover almost the whole of dermatology.
Although the book does need to be supplemented by further reading - it effectively serves the purpose of a second year resident.It fills the gap that other more in-depth textbooks on dermatology lack - the insight for beginners who are new to the subject.
I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to develop sound skills in the field of dermatology.
I thank the authors for their effort and hope they continue further editions of this book and build on scientific matter while retaining the original text, tables and format.

I have read this book almost 85 % , its very nice and informative book if you consider clinical dermatology as your aim in daily practice. I highly recommend students, GPs and dermatologists to purchase this book. The reputation of the authors as a well known pioneers in dermatology for the past several decades, has highly encourged me to buy this book.
For me , its the best of bests for clinical dermatology practice and deserve all the efforts spent on it.

Yet, in 1972, General Creighton Abrams, the Army Chief of Staff, attempted to disestablish the Chemical Corps because he saw no need for it. Had that decision not been reversed in 1976, there would not have been any chemical defense specialists or equipment available for Operation Desert Storm in 1990.

This study tracks events relating to the Department of Defense's CB warfare program between 1968 and 1990, as it evolved up to the Gulf War. It also details how the military develops and procures CB defense equipment to protect today's soldiers. Mauroni draws parallels between the development of binary chemical weapons, the chemical demilitarization program, and the DoD CB terrorism response efforts, as each has very similar issues and solutions. He seeks to educate leading officials and the general public about the facts behind CB warfare and the options for coping with it in the future. With proper training and equipment, the challenge of CB warfare can be met and dealt with on the modern battlefield.

Important Information for CBRN Professionals

Not for the casual or typical reader, "America's Struggle..." is great background information for those closely engaged in the CBRN business. Love or hate Al Mauroni, he is the only contemporary author writing on the specifics of DoD's CBRN defense program. Particularly interesting is his description of the near death of the U.S. Chemical Corps and how circumstances and the actions of some key leaders helped preserve this key capability for the U.S. Army. Sections of the book dealing with materiel programs such as decontamination and protection detract and divert the reader's attention from the true strength of the book which is the history of policy making and action in this key area. Going for over $100 on Amazon, don't pay that much, but if you get your hands on this book, it is worth a read.

The ability to improvise represents one of the highest levels of musical achievement. An improviser must master a musical language to such a degree as to be able to spontaneously invent stylistically idiomatic compositions on the spot. This feat is one of the pinnacles of human creativity, and yet its cognitive basis is poorly understood. What musical knowledge is required for improvisation? How does a musician learn to improvise? What are the neural correlates of improvised performance?

In The Improvising Mind, these questions are explored through an interdisciplinary approach that draws on cognitive neuroscience, study of historical pedagogical treatises on improvisation, interviews with improvisers, and musical analysis of improvised performances. Findings from these treatises and interviews are discussed from the perspective of cognitive psychological theories of learning, memory, and expertise. Musical improvisation has often been compared to 'speaking a musical language.' While past research has focussed on comparisons of music and language perception, few have dealt with this comparison in the performance domain. In this book, learning to improvise is compared with language acquisition, and improvised performance is compared with spontaneous speech from both theoretical and neurobiological perspectives.

About the Author

Aaron Berkowitz received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University, his Ph.D. in music from Harvard University, and his Bachelors degrees in Music (B.A.) and Biology (B.S.) from George Washington University. He has published his research in the journals NeuroImage and Twentieth Century Music, has been an invited speaker at several major U.S. universities and conferences, and served as a guest professor in music and psychology at Tufts University. As a pianist and fortepianist he has performed throughout Europe and the U.S., and as a composer his compositions have been performed in Europe and the U.S., including Carnegie Hall.

Recommendation for everyone interested in this exciting way of musical practice

The subject of musical improvisation - explored through an interdisciplinary approach. The author explains, in an understandible way for the non-professional interested reader, and nevertheless in a sufficently profound way for the expert, the different aspects of improvisation.

On the one hand, the reader gets interesting historical and pedagogical insights, and he also will learn important aspects of the historical development of the musical knowledge base that is necessary for the practice of improvisation. On the other hand he will get important scientific insights in the state of the art of neurobiological studies about brain activities while improvising.

But these are not the only aspects on improvisation, treated in this 200 p. book. Learners'and teachers' perspectives as well as performers'and audiences'perspectives are treated in a crosscultural way. Improvisation is not a domain of Jazz music, as some readers may think. It exists in classical music likewise, and in the music of all other cultures.

The comparison of the learning process of improvising music and speaking a second language is another aspect that is treated in a multidisciplinary way.

I enjoyed very much reading this book and I recommend it to everyone interested in this exciting way of musical performance.

Also, there was a widespread belief that human agencies had been involved, and such scapegoats as foreigners, the poor and Jews were all accused of poisoning wells. The final section of the book charts the social and psychological impact of the plague, and its effect on the late-medieval economy.

Excellent Resource

I have used this text in a literature class focused on writing about and in the wake of the 14th century plague. While there are other collections of primary sources on plague, the aspects of Horrox's work that make her edition superior are: 1) her breakdown of "narrative accounts" by geography, distinguishing between accounts from continental Europe and the British Isles--very useful in reminding students of differences among medieval cultures, and; 2) her own excellent introductions to each of the main sections ("Narrative Accounts," "Explanations and Responses," and "Consequences"). Horrox is a fine writer who imparts a lot of information with clarity and grace. Her engaging prose style helpfully explains the context of these writings and stimulates one's further interest.

Probably not for the first time reader about the Black Death

This is not for the casually interested reader, as it is comprised of primary source material. First time readers on the subject would be better off reading another book, such as Barbara Tuchman's great tome, "A Distant Mirror: the Calamitous Fourteenth Century." But any who are fascinated by the Great Mortality, as it was called contemporaneously, will find this a useful addition to their reading.

An outstanding collection of contemporary accounts

Horrox has collected and translated dozens of first-hand accounts of the Black Death of 1348 - 1350. The first quarter of the book is comprised of narrative accounts of the arrival and devastation of the plague, from its arrival in Italy to its spread into Britain. The middle half shows the various responses (medical, religious and scientific) to the mortality, the final quarter of the book examining its reprocussions.

All of the accounts presented here are from eye-witnessess to the terrible virulence and mortality of the Black Death. Although the majority of the documents are from Britain, there is a tremendous amount of similarity among them - the fear, shock, sadness and sense of fatalism as the disease ravaged Europe and the panic and social and economic dislocation that resulted. As a historian, I was fascinated; lay readers will almost certainly be similarly riveted by these accounts and the eerily familiar tone of the voices.

In what is quite possibly the most fun of all the Sopranos-themed titles being published in time for the show's September return, this tongue-in-cheek cookbook brings homestyle Soprano family cooking to the table. Artie Bucco, the character (played by John Ventimiglia) who is the chef at the show's Vesuvio restaurant, sets the tone of this book of insider "family" secrets by explaining his family's move from Campania, Italy, to New Jersey, then turns to various Soprano characters. (A brief chapter on Neapolitan cooking is explained by the Newark Public Library's Natalie del Greco, who offers recipes for a simple Marinara Sauce as well as a Sunday Gravy.) In a chapter entitled "The Soprano Family Tradition," Bucco listens as Corrado Soprano Jr., or Uncle Jun', reminisces about Newark's Little Italy (which at one time felt like an "Italian Disneyland") while whetting his appetite with thoughts of Pasta Fagiole and Panzerotti (Neapolitan Potato Croquettes). While the book's conceit is playfully written by Rucker (The Sopranos: A Family History) in the voice of each character, the recipes, by Scicolone (Italian Holiday Cooking), are solid and honest-to-goodness Italian-American dishes. In a conversation with Bucco, Carmela Soprano reveals her Sicilian upbringing through such recipes as `Shcarole and Garlic (sauteed escarole), while scale-tipping Bobby Bacala pontificates on the importance of sweets and offers his own way to make Cannoli. Even the godfather himself, Tony Soprano, lectures on the art of the grill (fans will remember his BBQ panic attack). In the end, readers are left with a book-filled with stills from Soprano episodes-that is alternately enticing and wonderfully tacky, just like the Soprano family members themselves.

Delicious and easy!

I got this as a gift for my dad, who's a fantastic cook and a huge Sopranos fan. He loves all the recipes and the little notes from characters that the author stuck in between the recipes. The recipes have a pretty wide range of skill-level needed, but everyone over age 16 should be able to make most of the recipes in this book. Your skill level will make the dish better or worse than normal, but everyone should be able to at least get a decent meal out of it. The book is very large and the print is big, so my older father can read it with ease (he normally has reading glasses).

As an added bonus, my dad now makes amazing Italian meals from this book for our dinner when I come home:)

Awesome book and awesome recipes! As head of the notorious Ossobuco crime family, I expect fine examples of "cucina nostra" on my table, and great entertainment in the literature I peruse. This book delivers on both! My compliments to Signore Buco and the Sopranos clan and crew. Now, where's my cannoli and espresso? (I already took the gun - as I always say, never leave a good one behind!)

Just like Nona's kitchen

As I read through the recipes, I could hear the sound of my Nona's voice. The pronunciation of the words, the way I say them, to this day, made me giggle to myself. The recipes are damn close, some spot on to hers. Every Italian family has their own tweaks, but if you weren't lucky enough to have an Italian grandmother, this is a good substitute. Good hearty meals, and they call it Gravy! YES!!! Be prepared to by some yoga pants, but these delicious recipes are worth the extra time on the treadmill.
